Nigeria Urges Calm, Vigilance Amid Reports of Ebola Case

The Ministry of Health has urged the public to remain calm and vigilant following reports of a confirmed Ebola case in Nigeria involving a Nigerian woman who reportedly travelled to the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for business.

According to the Ministry, preliminary information indicates that the woman transited through Uganda in early October without showing symptoms but developed symptoms after arriving in Nigeria.

The Ministry clarified that the woman’s transit through Uganda does not establish that she contracted the virus in the country, adding that investigations are ongoing to determine the possible location of exposure.

It also noted that detailed information on the woman’s travel itinerary and clinical history is yet to be provided by the Nigerian Government. These details, it said, would be essential in guiding further investigations and any necessary contact-tracing efforts.

The Ministry further emphasised that, as of the time of its statement, Uganda had no confirmed active Ebola cases.

It added that limited arrangements had been maintained for humanitarian and diplomatic travel, while relevant agencies would strengthen screening procedures and public health controls at points of entry.

The Ministry called on members of the public to maintain good hygiene practices, including regular handwashing and the use of hand sanitisers, while relying on verified information from official sources.

It assured the public that updates would continue to be communicated through its official channels as more information becomes available.
