The Nigerian government may soon approve a salary increase for top political office holders, including President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, senators, and ministers. This was revealed by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).
RMAFC Chairman, Mohammed Shehu, explained that the current pay package for political leaders is outdated and no longer realistic.
He noted that the salary structure has remained unchanged since 2008, despite growing responsibilities and the harsh economic situation in the country.
Shehu pointed out that the President of Nigeria currently earns around ₦1.5 million monthly, which he described as too low compared to what some heads of government agencies or bank chiefs receive.
According to him, it is unfair that a CBN governor or a director-general is paid ten to twenty times more than the President or Attorney-General of the Federation.
However, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly opposed the proposed salary review. The union argued that it would be wrong for politicians to enjoy higher pay while ordinary Nigerians continue to struggle with inflation, poverty, and rising living costs.
