To show respect for the late President Muhammadu Buhari, the United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate in Lagos will remain closed on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.
This announcement was made by the US Mission in Nigeria through their official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, July 14. The closure is in line with Nigeria’s national holiday declared in honour of the former president.
As a result of the closure, all visa appointments scheduled for that day have been cancelled. The embassy has promised that new dates will be given to those affected.
Normal services at both the embassy and the consulate are expected to resume once the holiday ends.
The Nigerian government declared Tuesday a work-free day to pay respect to Buhari, who died in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82.
Buhari served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023. Before that, he was the country’s military head of state between 1983 and 1985.
He was well-known for his tough stance against corruption and for working to improve security across Nigeria.
The US Mission said the closure is part of the national mourning and a way to show respect for Nigeria’s former leader.
President Bola Tinubu had earlier announced seven days of mourning. During this time, Nigerian flags are to fly at half-mast across the nation.
