US shuts down its embassy in Nigeria to honour late president Buhari

The United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will remain closed on Tuesday, July 15. This was announced by the US Mission in Nigeria as a way to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

This closure comes as Nigeria observes a national public holiday to mourn the ex-president, who passed away in London on Sunday after a short illness. The Nigerian government declared the public holiday to allow citizens pay their last respects.

Buhari is expected to be buried in his hometown, Daura in Katsina State, on the same day.

In a statement shared on the Mission’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle, it was confirmed that all embassy and consular services, including visa appointments, will be temporarily suspended on Tuesday.

The US Mission assured affected applicants that all missed visa appointments will be rescheduled. Regular operations are expected to resume on Wednesday, July 16.
