Kenneth Okonkwo, a member of the opposition coalition, has shared his thoughts on the 2027 presidential election. According to him, President Bola Tinubu is likely to win again if the African Democratic Congress (ADC) chooses a southern candidate like Peter Obi as their flag bearer.
Okonkwo, who is both a lawyer and a former actor, said the only way to beat Tinubu is by choosing a powerful political figure from the North. He mentioned names like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal as strong options.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Okonkwo made it clear that he personally plans to support a northern candidate in the 2027 election.
He pointed out that the candidate must be someone the entire northern region can support fully. According to him, if the North decides to back someone like Atiku or Tambuwal, then that person should be supported by the opposition.
Okonkwo added that the candidate should be qualified and experienced—especially in leadership roles. He also said that having a southern running mate would strengthen the chances of winning against Tinubu.
In summary, Kenneth Okonkwo believes that for the opposition to have any chance in 2027, they must be strategic. Choosing a southern candidate could make it easier for Tinubu to stay in power. But by backing a strong, widely accepted northerner with a balanced ticket, the opposition could turn the tables.
