Imo Court Sentences 28-Year-Old POS Operator to Death for Kidnap, Murder of 83-Year-Old Man, Driver

An Imo State High Court sitting in the Urualla Judicial Division has sentenced a 28-year-old Point-of-Sale (POS) operator, Isaac Okorie, to death by hanging for his involvement in the kidnapping and murder of an 83-year-old man, Chief Alexander Chukwuma Okoli, and his driver, Daniel Sarki.

The judgment followed a trial in which the prosecution presented evidence linking Okorie to the abduction and killing of the two victims in a crime reportedly motivated by ransom.

According to the prosecution, the convict and his alleged accomplices kidnapped the elderly man and his driver but subsequently murdered them instead of securing their release.

The case was further compounded by reports that the victims’ remains had not been recovered, leaving their families struggling to find closure.

Court Delivers Verdict

The court, after considering the evidence presented during the trial, found Okorie guilty of offences relating to conspiracy, kidnapping and murder.

In its ruling, the court sentenced him to death by hanging, bringing a significant development in the pursuit of justice for the victims and their families.

Reacting to the judgment, representatives of the bereaved family reportedly expressed some relief over the court’s decision but said the failure to recover the victims’ remains continued to cause them considerable pain.

The family also called for intensified efforts by security agencies to track down other alleged accomplices who remain at large and ensure they face justice.

Warning to Criminal Networks

The judgment highlights the legal consequences of violent crimes involving kidnapping, ransom demands and murder, while underscoring the need for stronger security measures to dismantle criminal networks.

It also raises concerns about the potential misuse of legitimate neighbourhood businesses as channels for criminal activities, although the case against the convict remains specific to the evidence established in court.

The family continues to seek closure as efforts to bring any remaining suspects to justice remain a priority.
