The wife of the Abia State Governor, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, has shown strong support for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for its tireless work in stopping drug abuse and trafficking, especially in Abia State and other parts of Nigeria.
She made this known on Thursday during a drug awareness event held in Umuahia. The event was put together by the NDLEA in partnership with the Abia State Government to raise awareness about the dangers of drug use.
Speaking through Mrs. Adaeze Emetu, the wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Otti stressed that young people must be protected from the harmful effects of drug abuse. She assured that the state government would continue to back every effort that helps keep youths safe and healthy.
Mrs. Otti also mentioned that the 2025 United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking gives Abia State a great chance to show how committed it is to fighting drug use and helping those affected.
Also speaking at the event, the Acting Commander of the NDLEA in Abia, Deputy Commander of Narcotics Chigbu Odoemelam Chilee, said that many crimes in society begin with problems like poverty, lack of education, family issues, and emotional trauma.
He explained that if drug addiction is treated as a health issue and more attention is given to preventing it, especially among children, society can avoid many future problems.
According to him, breaking the chain of drug abuse and crime starts with family support, better mental health services, youth awareness programs, and proper drug education.
