Terrorists Escape from Prison in Niger Republic

A breakout has happened at Koutoukalé Prison in the Niger Republic, with many terrorists, criminals, and drug traffickers escaping.

According to Reuters, the escapees include detainees from Niger and members of groups tied to al Qaeda, Islamic State, and Boko Haram.

Security expert Zaga Zola said that the prison, near Niamey, saw a violent mutiny on Thursday, July 11. The uprising overpowered the guards, allowing inmates to flee with weapons and vehicles.

Witnesses heard gunshots and explosions inside the prison around noon, leading to a quick response from security forces. However, the inmates took control, breaking through secure gates, barbed wire, and trenches.

The prison had previously stopped two attempts by jihadists to free their fighters. An investigation is underway to find out how the inmates got weapons and overpowered the guards.

Niger’s Interior Minister confirmed the escape of some inmates via a radio message to all governors. He asked village chiefs and religious leaders to report any suspicious persons.

In response, a curfew is now in place in the Tillabéri region, and the entire River Niger region is on high alert.
