President Bola Tinubu has been re-elected for another one-year term as the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of States and Government.
Tinubu’s first term is set to end on July 9, 2024. However, his leadership has been extended for another year following a unanimous decision by fellow Heads of Government at the 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority. This session took place at the State House in Abuja on Sunday, showcasing strong support for Tinubu’s leadership within the West African regional bloc.
In his acceptance speech, President Tinubu expressed his gratitude and commitment to the role. He said, “I have accepted to continue to deliver on this service with the great men and women on this democratic journey, to serve our interest and build democratic values on the structure we inherited.”
Sources from the Presidency had hinted at the possibility of Tinubu’s re-election on Saturday night. According to one anonymous source, “Some people say he should hand over, and others say he should continue. But they will decide tomorrow.” This statement indicated the mixed opinions regarding his continuation in the role, yet the final decision was made collectively by the Heads of Government.
Tinubu initially assumed the position of Chairman at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the regional bloc held last July in Bissau, the capital of Guinea-Bissau. His leadership during his first term has been marked by efforts to strengthen democratic values and regional cooperation among member states.
The re-election of Tinubu as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of States and Government highlights the confidence and trust placed in him by his peers to lead the organization for another year.
