Court summons Rivers Administrator over LGA appointments

A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt has told the Rivers State Administrator to appear in court and explain why the court should not stop the appointment of Sole Administrators in all 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state.

This order was given by Justice Adamu Turaki Mohammed on Monday, April 7, 2025. It came after a request from a group called the Pilex Centre for Civic Education Initiative and its Coordinator, Courage Nsirimovu. They want the court to stop the administrator from appointing Sole Administrators, saying this action could harm democracy in the state.

Justice Mohammed said the administrator must be officially informed and must explain why the court should not grant the temporary order. He stressed the importance of fairness and following the right process in government decisions. The case has been moved to April 14, 2025, for the next hearing.

The lawyer for the group, A. O. Imiete, asked the court to accept their request and also submitted a written explanation. The administrator did not attend the hearing.

This legal case, marked FHC/PH/CS/46/2025, is happening during a time of political tension in Rivers State. Many people are unhappy with the plan to appoint Sole Administrators in all LGAs. The outcome of this case could be very important for how local governments are managed in Nigeria.
