Fenerbahce has spoken out in support of their manager, Jose Mourinho, after a tense moment during their Turkish Cup match against Galatasaray on Wednesday night.
The incident happened after Fenerbahce lost 2-1 at home. Mourinho was seen grabbing Galatasaray’s coach, Okan Buruk, by the nose. Buruk then fell to the ground, and Mourinho was quickly pulled away by his coaching staff.
Because Mourinho received a red card, he wasn’t allowed to speak to the media after the game.
On Thursday, Fenerbahce released a statement to explain their side of the story. They said Buruk approached Mourinho after the game pretending to shake hands, but instead made provoking hand gestures and comments. They claim Mourinho only touched Buruk’s nose briefly in response to this.
According to Fenerbahce, Buruk acted like he was seriously hurt and fell to the ground in an exaggerated way. They described his reaction as a “planned and over-the-top” attempt to provoke more drama and said the entire moment was caught on video.
Meanwhile, Okan Buruk has also shared his reaction to the event, but more details on his response are yet to come.
