Manchester United secured a 3-2 win over Ipswich Town on Wednesday, but the match was not without drama. Defender Patrick Dorgu received a straight red card, which will see him miss the next three domestic games.
Dorgu, who joined United from Lecce in January, was playing only his third match for the club. He had a mixed performance, assisting Jaden Philogene’s opening goal in the fourth minute before being sent off later in the first half.
United took the lead through an own goal by Sam Morsy and a strike from Matthijs de Ligt. However, in the 43rd minute, Dorgu made a rash challenge on Omari Hutchinson. After a VAR review, referee Darren England showed him a red card.
Ipswich quickly equalized, with Philogene scoring again. But United regained the lead in the second half when Harry Maguire headed in the winning goal.
After the game, United manager Rúben Amorim defended Dorgu but admitted the challenge was careless. “Patrick Dorgu is ready for the Premier League; he has proven that in the last few games,” Amorim said. “Any player can make a mistake like that. He wanted to play the ball, but he was a bit careless.”
Dorgu will now miss United’s FA Cup match against Fulham on Sunday, along with two more games in the league.
