In a recent development in Lagos, two lawmakers were detained by the State Security Service (DSS) over their involvement in the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. Lanre Afinni and Sylvester Ogunkelu, who represent Lagos Island 2 and other areas, were questioned by the DSS on January 30. The questioning was linked to allegations that they broke into a House store to seize the mace, which was crucial in allowing the Assembly to convene and remove Obasa.

This event followed the Assembly’s vote on January 13, when a majority of the lawmakers voted to oust Obasa and elected Mojisola Meranda as his successor. Afinni and Ogunkelu’s detention raised concerns, but Deputy Speaker Mojeed Fatai and other Assembly members acted swiftly to ensure their release.

After hours of questioning, Stephen Ogundipe, Chairman of the Assembly’s Ad Hoc Committee on Information, confirmed the release of the detained lawmakers. Ogundipe emphasized that the removal of Obasa was in full compliance with the Nigerian Constitution and the Powers and Privileges Act, which guide the process of electing and removing a speaker.

He also made it clear that the Assembly acted within its rights, and any challenges to the removal would undermine the constitutional powers granted to the Assembly. Ogundipe praised the professionalism of the DSS, particularly the Director of the Lagos Command, for managing the situation in a respectful and smooth manner.

The Lagos Assembly continues to uphold its commitment to effective governance and to serving the people of Lagos. Ogundipe urged all parties to respect the legislative autonomy of the Assembly and avoid any interference in its internal workings.
