US Parliament passes bill to deport illegal immigrants charged with minor crimes

The United States Congress has passed a law aimed at deporting illegal immigrants who are charged with minor crimes. Known as the Laken Riley Act, the law empowers federal authorities to detain and deport such individuals in an effort to enhance public safety.

The law was named after Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student from Georgia who was tragically killed by Jose Ibarra, a Venezuelan migrant who entered the U.S. illegally. Ibarra had been arrested for shoplifting before the incident but was not detained. He was later convicted of Riley’s murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Republican Representative Mike Collins, who sponsored the bill, stated that the system had failed to protect Laken. The new law seeks to prevent similar tragedies by expanding the list of crimes that could lead to detention and deportation. Crimes such as burglary, theft, larceny, and shoplifting are now included in this list.

The Act passed in the House with bipartisan support, receiving votes from all Republicans and 48 Democrats, ending with a 252-157 result. However, some Democratic critics argue that the law is too broad and could unfairly target people who are not dangerous.

This bill also reflects President-elect Donald Trump’s firm stance on immigration. Trump has promised to reduce illegal immigration and enforce mass deportations shortly after taking office on January 20.

The passage of the Laken Riley Act highlights a significant step toward tighter immigration controls, though the debate over its fairness continues.
