The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is currently facing internal tension in its Lagos axis after some student leaders rejected the outcome of a recent election. The dispute followed the selection of new executives for the Joint Campus Council (JCC), raising concerns about fairness in the process.
Six out of the ten senators who took part in the election openly opposed what they described as an attempt to change the results. The exercise, held at the Federal College of Education, was reportedly conducted under the watch of security agencies to ensure transparency.
According to the dissenting leaders, the election featured two candidates—Odewunmi Quadri and Rilwan Ajayi. They stated that Quadri secured six votes while Ajayi got four, giving Quadri a clear majority. However, controversy began when a different result was allegedly announced.
The senators claimed that the convention chairman declared the outcome as a 5-5 tie and hinted at using his authority to decide the winner. This move, they argued, goes against the constitution guiding NANS elections and undermines democratic principles.
In their joint statement, the group insisted there was no tie and that the votes clearly produced a winner. They warned that any attempt to override the decision of accredited voters would be considered invalid and unacceptable.
The crisis has sparked wider debate about leadership and accountability within student unions. Many observers believe how NANS resolves this issue will shape trust in future student elections and governance structures.
