The Federal High Court in Abuja has affirmed the final forfeiture of $13 million linked to Lagos socialite Aisha Achimugu and Oceangate Engineering Oil & Gas Ltd to the Federal Government.
Justice Emeka Nwite held that EFCC proved the funds were proceeds of fraud, while Oceangate failed to show legitimate ownership of the money.
The court dismissed claims that the money was a gift or part of the company’s lawful earnings, noting no witnesses were called to support Oceangate’s assertions.
Investigations revealed that part of the $13 million was derived from public funds misused to pay signature bonuses for oil blocks PPL 302 and PPL 3007.
EFCC presented evidence showing Oceangate used unlicensed BDC operators and bank officials to retain and transfer the funds, confirming unlawful activities.
The court maintained that forfeiture serves justice and prevents proceeds of fraud from benefiting private entities, reinforcing Nigeria’s anti-corruption framework.
