Women’s groups in Nigeria are urging the National Assembly to quickly pass the Special Seats for Women Bill before the 2027 elections.
The National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), NILOWV, NAWOJ, FOMWAN, and FIDA sent formal letters to lawmakers in all 36 states supporting the bill.
The petitions were delivered directly to lawmakers, asking them to prioritize the legislation and strengthen women’s participation in governance.
Irene Awuna-Ikyegh, President of NILOWV, emphasized that the bill is a national development priority, not just a gender issue, to address women’s underrepresentation.
FIDA, NAWOJ, and NCWS leaders said the bill will create more opportunities for women to contest elections and shape policymaking.
Journalist and gender advocate Adaora Onyechere Sydney-Jack noted the unified mobilization demonstrates that inclusive representation is critical for Nigeria’s democracy.
