No going back on cashless policy at airports – Keyamo

Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation, has reiterated that Nigeria’s airports will fully transition to a cashless payment system, despite the current temporary hybrid arrangement allowing both cash and electronic payments. The move aims to modernize airport revenue collection and comply with federal government directives.

Keyamo explained that the hybrid system is only temporary while authorities prepare for a fully automated digital platform. He stressed that digital payments will be cheaper than cash to encourage adoption and eliminate physical money at airport revenue points.

The minister noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has set a strict deadline for full implementation. Keyamo warned that officials delaying the policy will be held accountable and emphasized his direct oversight of the project to ensure timely execution.

He concluded that the hybrid system will soon be phased out, marking a major step toward a fully digital payment framework across all Nigerian airport facilities.
