Tension is rising at the Federal University of Technology Minna (FUTMINNA) as students and staff oppose plans by the Niger State government to take control of the Bosso Campus. The dispute began after the state asked the university to vacate the property, claiming a long-standing lease had expired. The move has created uncertainty on campus, especially as students continue exams and academic activities.
The state government, led by Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, said the facility is needed for medical students of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University Teaching Hospital. However, many students and lecturers insist the campus is still fully active and essential for lectures, laboratories, and hostels.
Academic unions and student bodies have also reacted strongly. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), and the Students’ Union Government warned that the move could disrupt teaching, research, and examinations. They urged the federal authorities to intervene and protect the university’s property.
Meanwhile, FUTMINNA management maintained that the Bosso Campus was permanently acquired by the Federal Government in 1983 and not leased. Officials say the university has invested heavily in developing the site and warned that any takeover could affect more than 25,000 students relying on the campus for academic and residential facilities.
