A four-storey building housing Yemco Nursery, Primary and Comprehensive College collapsed around midday at 11 Adudatu Street, Aguda, Ogba, Lagos. Students and teachers had been evacuated minutes before the incident, preventing casualties.
Residents said the building had shown early signs of distress, including cracks and falling window frames, prompting the quick evacuation. An elderly man alerted school authorities about the potential danger, allowing occupants to leave safely.
Witness Taiwo Ridwan described how the cement started peeling and the structure eventually gave way within minutes, narrowly avoiding what could have been a tragedy. Part of the property used for residential purposes remains standing beside the collapsed school.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service quickly secured the scene and restricted access to the area to prevent accidents and further damage. No casualties were reported at the time, and officials were still assessing the situation.
Attempts to obtain an official statement from Margaret Adeseye, Director of Public Affairs for the Fire Service, were unsuccessful as of reporting time. Residents continue to monitor the area for safety concerns.
Authorities have called for a thorough inspection of nearby buildings to ensure they are structurally sound, emphasizing the importance of proactive safety measures in schools and residential areas.
