UMARU IN CATCH-22 With The Army Heads To Supreme Court

Ex-Major General UM Mohammed has moved to the Supreme Court of Nigeria to challenge a Court of Appeal ruling delivered on February 9, 2026. The appellate court had only partially upheld his appeal against a conviction by a Special Court Martial.

Mohammed, formerly Managing Director of Nigerian Army Properties Limited, was convicted for allegedly misappropriating company funds. The Army was the sole promoter, and he worked under the then Chief of Army Staff, who oversaw all expenditures and directed company operations.

The ex-general compared his trial to a famous case involving former Minister of Transport, Umaru Dikko, saying it unfairly held him responsible while those giving orders remain free. He described the process as a “witch-hunt” and believes the Supreme Court can clear his name.

He also criticized the Nigerian Army for enforcing orders not issued by the Special Court Martial related to his Bank Verification Number (BVN) accounts, without restitution or official directives.

A Motion for Leave to Appeal has been filed at the Supreme Court under Motion No: CA/ABJ/PRE/ROA/CR/174MI/2026, seeking to nullify part of the appellate court judgment and overturn the Special Court Martial verdict.

The legal team has declined media comments, stating the matter is sub judice and under proper judicial consideration, as Mohammed pursues justice at the highest court in Nigeria.
