A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party led by Kabiru Turaki has rejected a recent judgment by the Court of Appeal (Nigeria) that nullified the party’s national convention held in November 2025. The group has announced plans to challenge the ruling at the Supreme Court.
The appellate court upheld an earlier decision by the Federal High Court (Nigeria), which stopped the party from conducting the convention in Ibadan, Oyo State. The ruling was delivered by a three-member panel of judges on Monday.
Justice Uchechukwu Onyemenam, who delivered the lead judgment, stated that the party failed to follow constitutional procedures required before organizing the convention. According to the court, the party did not properly notify the electoral body as required by law.
The court also noted that party congresses were not conducted in at least 14 states before the convention took place. Because of this, the judges ruled that the convention violated legal provisions guiding party activities and could not be recognized.
Reacting to the decision, PDP spokesperson Ini Ememobong said the Turaki-led faction has instructed its legal team to file an appeal at the Supreme Court of Nigeria. He expressed confidence that the apex court would provide a final decision on the issue.
Ememobong also called on party members to remain united despite the legal challenge. He added that the leadership believes the matter will soon be resolved and urged supporters to remain hopeful while the legal process continues.
