Russia secured its first Paralympic medal in over a decade after Varvara Voronchikhina won bronze in the women’s downhill standing event in Cortina d’Ampezzo. The achievement marks the country’s first Paralympic podium finish since the 2014 Winter Paralympics.
The participation of Russian athletes came after approval from the International Paralympic Committee, which allowed a limited number of competitors from Russia and Belarus to compete under their national flags.
The decision sparked criticism from several countries, including Ukraine, with some delegations boycotting the opening ceremony and spectators reacting strongly during the parade.
Despite the controversy, Voronchikhina expressed joy over her medal, saying it meant a lot after years of restrictions. She described the moment as emotional and a proud achievement for herself and her teammates.
