The Tor Tiv has introduced new traditional guidelines placing a ₦100,000 maximum limit on marriage rites, a move aimed at reducing financial pressure on families. The directive is expected to discourage excessive demands that often delay marriages and create hardship for intending couples.
In addition, the traditional ruler approved the recognition of women’s legal right to inherit property within Tiv customs. The decision marks a major cultural shift, as inheritance practices in many communities have historically favored male heirs.
Community leaders say the reforms are designed to promote fairness, modern values, and social stability while still respecting tradition. They noted that simplifying marriage expenses could help young people marry earlier without heavy debt or family disputes.
Observers believe the changes could influence other traditional institutions to review long-standing customs. Many residents have welcomed the announcement, describing it as a progressive step toward equality and economic relief.
