The government of Lagos has announced plans to deploy surveillance drones as part of new strategies to improve safety and intelligence gathering across the state. The initiative, developed in partnership with security agencies, is designed to strengthen monitoring capacity and help authorities respond quickly to threats. Officials say the move reflects the state’s commitment to using modern technology to tackle crime and protect residents.
The disclosure was made by Ayodele Ogunsan, head of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, during a press briefing marking his first 100 days in office. He explained that the project will involve signing a cooperation agreement with the Nigerian Air Force and the Nigeria Police Airwing to support joint aerial security operations. According to him, unmanned aerial vehicles will provide wider surveillance coverage and improve coordination among security teams.
Ogunsan stressed that Lagos, as the nation’s commercial hub, must continue investing in modern tools to safeguard lives, businesses and infrastructure. He noted that the Trust Fund has already strengthened its financial base through partnerships and has deployed about 80 new patrol vehicles to improve response time. More vehicles are also expected to arrive soon to expand operational capacity.
He added that plans are underway to rehabilitate previously unused armoured carriers and introduce statewide training programmes for security personnel. The programmes will focus on professionalism, tactical skills and better service delivery. Ogunsan reaffirmed that transparency, accountability and innovation will guide the agency’s efforts as it works with partners to maintain a safe environment for residents.
