Father allegedly confines, chains son for 17 years in Bauchi

Police authorities in Bauchi State have rescued a middle-aged man who was allegedly locked up and kept in chains by his own father for about 17 years. The victim, identified as Muhammad Lawan, also known as Babangida, was reportedly discovered in Shadawanka village after a concerned resident alerted officials about his condition.

According to the police spokesperson, detectives visited the residence alongside the Divisional Police Officer of the area and found the man severely weak and malnourished. He was immediately freed and taken for urgent medical care and rehabilitation to help restore his health after years of alleged neglect.

Authorities confirmed that the victim’s father, Mohammed Lawan, has been arrested and is currently in custody while investigations continue. The state Commissioner of Police has ordered a preliminary inquiry and directed that the matter be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a more detailed probe.

Police officials said more information would be released as the investigation progresses. The incident has drawn public concern, with many calling for justice and proper support for the victim as authorities work to uncover the circumstances behind the alleged long-term confinement.
