Disco arraigns six Lagosians for electricity meter bypass

Six residents of Lagos have been brought before a magistrate court following allegations of illegal electricity use. The suspects were arraigned by Eko Electricity Distribution Company before Magistrate T. M. Kassim Adeyelure at Court 6 in the Eti-Osa Magisterial District. Authorities say the case stems from a recent enforcement raid targeting electricity theft in the Ajah area.

According to prosecutors, the defendants were arrested on February 7, 2026, at a residence in Marshy-Hill Estate, Okeira Nla, where officials allegedly discovered that the electricity metering system had been bypassed. The charge sheet lists two counts, including conspiracy to commit a felony and unlawful diversion of electricity for personal use, both punishable under the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Legal representatives for the power company told the court that illegal connections not only reduce revenue but also threaten the safety of electrical infrastructure. They explained that meter bypass can overload transformers and disrupt voltage supply, ultimately affecting paying customers who depend on stable electricity in the area.

A spokesperson for the distribution company stressed that prosecuting such cases is meant to discourage energy theft and protect the power network. The case highlights ongoing efforts by authorities to clamp down on illegal electricity use and reinforce compliance with regulations governing power consumption across Lagos communities.
