South Korea’s intelligence agency has claimed that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has selected his teenage daughter, Kim Ju-ae, as his likely successor. Lawmakers in Seoul were briefed by the National Intelligence Service (NIS), which said several recent developments point to her being prepared for leadership in the future.
Kim Ju-ae, believed to be around 13 years old, has appeared frequently at major public events alongside her father. She first gained global attention in 2022 when she was shown inspecting an intercontinental ballistic missile with him. Since then, she has attended military ceremonies, national celebrations, and important diplomatic meetings, signaling a growing public profile.
The NIS reportedly based its assessment on her increased visibility and what it described as signs that she may already be involved in certain state matters. Observers say that if she attends or receives an official title at the upcoming party congress, speculation about her succession could intensify. However, some analysts believe a young female heir may face challenges in a society traditionally led by male figures.
Despite the discussions, no official confirmation has come from Pyongyang. Kim Yo-jong, the leader’s sister, has also been viewed by some as a possible successor in the past. For now, experts suggest that the public appearances of Kim Ju-ae may serve as a signal that the ruling family intends to maintain its hold on power for years to come.
