Rising Phone Thefts, Scam Rock Ikeja Computer Village

Ikeja Computer Village, known as Nigeria’s biggest technology market, is currently battling a rise in phone theft and scam activities. The busy Lagos market has long attracted thousands of buyers looking for gadgets at competitive prices. However, recent reports show that many customers are losing their phones shortly after purchase, while others fall victim to fraudulent sellers who disappear after making quick sales.

Several victims have shared troubling experiences. Some say their phones vanished from their pockets or bags without any physical struggle, especially in crowded areas of the market. Others explained how scammers cleverly swap original devices with fake ones during transactions. These incidents often happen within seconds, leaving buyers confused and helpless by the time they realize what has occurred.

Phone scams involving counterfeit devices, commonly called “China phones,” are also on the rise. These fake gadgets are packaged to look like popular brands and are sold to unsuspecting buyers. Many victims only discover the truth after leaving the market, and when they return, the seller is nowhere to be found. Legitimate traders say they are also affected, as angry customers frequently accuse them of being involved in the fraud.

Market leaders have acknowledged the growing concerns and say efforts are being made to improve security. The traders’ association claims it works with law enforcement agencies to track down criminals and fake sellers. Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has given traders an 18-month deadline to relocate to a newly developed site in Katangowa, which officials say will provide a safer and more organized trading environment.
