Electoral act: They plan to rig, give ‘someone’ advantage like in 2023 – Bugaje

Political analyst, Professor Attahiru Jega Bugaje, has warned that recent moves around the Electoral Act indicate attempts to rig future elections and give unfair advantages to certain individuals, similar to what occurred in the 2023 general elections. He expressed concern over delays and opposition to key reforms, including the real-time electronic transmission of results.

Bugaje stressed that efforts to undermine transparent electoral processes would erode public trust in the democratic system. He pointed out that any deviation from proper procedures could give select candidates undue benefits, as witnessed during the 2023 polls. According to him, this threatens the credibility and fairness of elections in Nigeria.

He also called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and demand full implementation of electoral reforms that promote transparency, accountability, and equal opportunity for all candidates. Bugaje emphasized the role of civil society, media, and citizens in holding the government accountable.

Finally, Bugaje urged lawmakers to prioritize electoral integrity over political interests. He highlighted that ensuring fair elections is not only vital for democracy but also crucial for maintaining public confidence in Nigeria’s political institutions.
