The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osun State has refuted reports circulating on social media that alleged underage students were registered as voters in Ede North Local Government Area. The claim, shared on Facebook, suggested that schoolchildren in uniforms were allowed to register on February 6, 2026. INEC, through Resident Electoral Commissioner Dr. Mutiu Agboke, confirmed that the allegation is false and misleading.
According to the commission, students from YTD Grammar School, Ojoro, Ede, did visit the Ede North office intending to register. However, election officials on duty strictly enforced the legal age requirement and denied entry to any person under 18, in compliance with the 1999 Constitution and the 2022 Electoral Act. No underage person was registered on that day.
INEC reassured residents that all voter registration exercises in Osun State are conducted according to the law, and its officials have been instructed not to condone or allow any action that could compromise the integrity of the process. The commission urged the public to rely only on official statements rather than social media rumors.
The commission also called on parents, school authorities, and community leaders to educate young people about the legal requirements for voter registration, emphasizing that only Nigerian citizens aged 18 and above are eligible to register. INEC stressed that the age verification process would continue to be strictly enforced across the state.
