Police arrest three over N10m blackmail plot in Lagos

Operatives of the Lagos Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU) have arrested three suspects over an alleged cyber blackmail scheme involving the demand of ₦10 million from a woman. The suspects—two men and a woman—were picked up after the victim reported ongoing threats linked to her private photographs.

According to the PSFU spokesperson, DSP Ovie Ewhubare, the victim had been receiving repeated calls and messages warning that her nude images would be leaked online if she failed to pay. Out of fear and emotional pressure, she reportedly sent money to the suspects several times before the demands increased.

Police investigations revealed that one of the suspects allegedly gained unauthorized access to the victim’s mobile phone and transferred her private images to his own device. The suspect was said to have worked with the others, as well as additional encouragements who are currently on the run, to extort money from the victim in instalments.

The suspects are currently in custody and will be charged to court after investigations are concluded. The police said efforts are ongoing to arrest other members of the syndicate and recover the proceeds of the crime. The PSFU also urged Nigerians to protect their personal data and promptly report any form of cyber harassment or digital blackmail.
