Suspected armed herdsmen on Friday afternoon attacked Anwase Market in Mbaikyor, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, leaving traders traumatised. During the attack, several women were reportedly kidnapped while the market was set on fire, destroying goods and livelihoods.
Residents said the attackers emerged suddenly from a nearby mountainous area and began shooting into the air, causing panic among traders and shoppers. In the confusion, the assailants allegedly forced some market women away from the scene before heading back towards the hills.
Eyewitnesses explained that the fire spread quickly through the market, making it impossible for locals to save their stalls. Many traders reportedly ran in different directions to escape, while others watched helplessly as their goods were consumed by flames before security operatives arrived.
As of the time of reporting, details on the exact number of people abducted remain unclear. Efforts to reach the Benue State Police Command for official confirmation were unsuccessful, while residents continue to call for urgent security intervention to prevent further attacks in the area.
