The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has expressed deep concern over the declining state of Nigerian universities, attributing the problem to poor governance and mismanagement of funds. According to the union, these challenges are weakening the quality of education and affecting the overall performance of tertiary institutions.
ASUU noted that irregular allocation of funds, lack of transparency, and ineffective monitoring have left universities struggling to maintain infrastructure, pay staff salaries, and fund research projects. The union stressed that financial mismanagement continues to hinder academic growth and institutional development.
In addition, the union highlighted governance issues, including weak leadership, poor decision-making processes, and lack of accountability in university management. ASUU emphasized that without reforms in governance and financial management, the higher education sector in Nigeria will continue to suffer setbacks.
The union called on the federal and state governments to prioritize funding, ensure transparency, and strengthen governance structures in universities. ASUU also urged stakeholders to engage in dialogue to protect the integrity and future of Nigerian higher education.
