The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed fake and expired drugs valued at about ₦55 billion in Oyo State. The destruction exercise was carried out to protect public health and stop dangerous medicines from finding their way back into the market. Officials said the seized products included counterfeit drugs, expired pharmaceuticals, and unregistered medical items.
According to NAFDAC, the drugs were confiscated during routine inspections, raids on illegal warehouses, and enforcement operations across major drug markets and storage facilities. The agency explained that many of the seized items were poorly stored and could cause serious harm if consumed. NAFDAC stressed that destroying the products was the safest option to prevent reuse or resale.
Speaking at the event, NAFDAC officials warned traders and distributors against dealing in fake or expired medicines. They noted that such practices endanger lives and undermine confidence in the healthcare system. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to strict regulation, surveillance, and enforcement to ensure only safe and approved drugs are available to Nigerians.
NAFDAC also called on the public to report suspicious drugs and unlicensed sellers to authorities. The agency said community support is vital in the fight against counterfeit medicines. It assured Nigerians that similar operations will continue nationwide as part of efforts to safeguard lives and strengthen drug control.
