‘Political terrorism’ – Aregbesola, ex-dep gov condemn burning of Ekiti ADC office

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the attack and burning of its secretariat in Ado-Ekiti, describing it as a direct assault on democracy and political freedom.

According to reports, residents and ADC members woke up on Tuesday to find the party’s office completely razed, with chairs, sound systems, and other equipment destroyed. Hours later, suspected hoodlums returned to attack the venue of the party’s affirmation ceremony, injuring several members and damaging vehicles.

Speaking at the scene, Rauf Aregbesola, the National Secretary of ADC and former Minister of Interior, described the incident as a “shameful act of political intolerance” and warned that it could lead to democratic collapse.

“It is regrettable that individuals who came into power through democratic means are now resorting to violence to silence the opposition. What happened in Ekiti is a dangerous signal and must not be tolerated,” Aregbesola said, criticizing security agencies for failing to protect lives and property.

Also reacting, Prof. Kolapo Olusola-Eleka, a former Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, called the attack “political terrorism,” lamenting that security operatives failed to respond even after early distress calls.

“We reported the attack over two hours before dawn, but the police didn’t show up. This is a complete failure of duty,” he said.

Ekiti ADC Chairman, Ilesanmi Omolayo, confirmed that several members were injured and were receiving treatment in hospitals. He alleged the attack was a ploy to intimidate the party because of its increasing support base.

Meanwhile, ADC governorship aspirant, Ambassador Dare Bejide, condemned the incident as “barbaric and undemocratic,” urging authorities to fish out the perpetrators.

Police spokesperson, SP Sunday Abutu, confirmed the incident, adding that the Commissioner of Police, Joseph Eribo, had ordered a full investigation to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
