Serie A: Runjaic sticks with Okoye as Udinese’s first choice goalkeeper

Udinese manager Kosta Runjaic has reaffirmed his confidence in Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, confirming that the 24-year-old will remain the club’s first-choice goalkeeper for the Serie A campaign.

Runjaic made this known after Udinese’s weekend training session, stressing that Okoye’s impressive performances have earned him a secure spot in the starting lineup. The German coach praised the Super Eagles shot-stopper for his composure, leadership, and consistency since taking over the goalkeeping duties earlier this season.

“Maduka has proven himself time and time again,” Runjaic said. “He gives us confidence at the back, and the team feels safe when he’s in goal. He deserves to continue as our number one.”

Okoye, who joined Udinese from Watford in 2023, initially faced competition for the spot but has now cemented his place with a series of standout performances, including crucial saves in recent matches that helped the club climb out of the relegation zone.

Fans have applauded the decision, noting that Okoye’s recent form is a reflection of his growing maturity and technical improvement. His continued starting role also boosts his chances of retaining a place in Nigeria’s squad ahead of upcoming international fixtures.
