The nominated Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Dr. Amupitan, has suggested the introduction of drones to enhance security and transparency during elections in Nigeria. The proposal was made on Thursday while he appeared before the Senate for screening and confirmation.
Amupitan’s comment came in response to a question from Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North, who expressed concern about the increasing insecurity and the challenge of safely transporting sensitive election materials to polling units across the country. In his reply, Amupitan explained that the use of drone technology would help INEC monitor election activities in real-time and detect any irregularities or threats early.
According to him, drones could serve as a valuable tool for aerial surveillance, particularly in hard-to-reach or volatile areas where traditional monitoring has proven difficult. He emphasized that technology remains one of the most effective ways to protect electoral personnel, voters, and materials, especially during national elections.
The nominee added that the introduction of drones would complement other existing election security measures and improve INEC’s ability to coordinate with security agencies. He further assured lawmakers that if confirmed, his leadership would focus on innovation, transparency, and efficiency in managing Nigeria’s electoral process.
Amupitan’s proposal has generated discussions among political analysts and citizens, many of whom see it as a step in the right direction toward credible and technology-driven elections. The idea, if implemented, could mark a new era in Nigeria’s electoral system, promoting both security and accountability at the polls.
