The United States Army War College (USAWC) has posthumously honoured the late Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Nigeria’s 23rd Chief of Army Staff, by inducting him into its prestigious International Hall of Fame (IHOF). The ceremony took place on Monday, October 13, 2025, during the opening of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Annual Convention held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Centre, Washington D.C.
The award, presented by Major General Trevor J. Bredenkamp, Commandant of the USAWC, celebrated General Lagbaja’s remarkable leadership, vision, and contributions to international peace and military professionalism. His induction marked a historic moment — making him the first-ever Nigerian Army officer to be enshrined in the USAWC International Hall of Fame in the institution’s 124-year history.
Representing the current Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, was Major General Adeleke Ayannuga, who received the award alongside Mrs. Maria Abiodun Lagbaja, the late general’s widow. The event was attended by top Nigerian and U.S. military officials, including Major General G.O. Adesina, Major General G.T.O. Ajetunmobi, and Mrs. Deborah Aboderin from the U.S. Embassy in Abuja. Nigerian officers currently studying at U.S. military institutions were also present.
Lieutenant General Oluyede, in his remarks, described the induction as a moment of national pride and a reflection of the Nigerian Army’s growing global recognition. He stated that General Lagbaja’s name now stands among the finest military leaders in the world — a lasting tribute to his courage, professionalism, and service to humanity.
This posthumous recognition serves as both an honour to the late general’s memory and a reaffirmation of Nigeria’s commitment to international peace and security. General Lagbaja’s legacy, built on integrity, discipline, and dedication, continues to inspire generations of Nigerian soldiers and global peacekeepers alike.
