Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has been celebrated for his outstanding efforts both on and off the pitch, picking up two major honours at the Nigerian UK Sports Awards (NUKSA).
Troost-Ekong received the Best Performance in a Major International Competition Award for his brilliant showing at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, where he was named Player of the Tournament.
His leadership and strength at the back played a huge role in helping Nigeria reach the AFCON final, proving once again why he is seen as one of Africa’s top defenders.
Away from football, Troost-Ekong was also given the Philanthropy & Humanitarian Award for the work of the Troost-Ekong Foundation. The foundation helps children in less privileged Nigerian communities by providing education, sports training, and access to basic needs. It continues to grow and give young people more opportunities for a brighter future.
Troost-Ekong’s influence goes beyond football. He is an early investor in Sokito, a brand that makes eco-friendly football boots. This shows his passion for sustainability and his drive to make a positive difference in sports and the environment.
The Super Eagles skipper is also stepping into the media world. He will launch a new podcast called Power and Purpose on September 25, alongside England rugby star Maro Itoje and broadcaster Leon Mann. The show will host national team captains from different sports to discuss leadership in sports, business, and life. Fans can listen through listenpowerandpurpose.komi.io or follow him and the co-hosts on social media.
Speaking about the double honour, Troost-Ekong said he was grateful: “I’m humbled to receive these awards. Football has given me so much, and I believe it’s my duty to give back. This recognition is not just for me but for everyone who supports the work of the Troost-Ekong Foundation.”
The NUKSA event celebrates Nigerian athletes making an impact both at home and abroad. Troost-Ekong’s awards highlight his mix of football excellence, community service, and leadership beyond the pitch.
With his football career, charity work, push for sustainability, and new media projects, Troost-Ekong is building a strong legacy that inspires people in Nigeria and around the world.
