EPL: He’s very stubborn, decision on Mainoo baffles me – Lineker blasts Amorim

Former England striker, Gary Lineker, has criticised Manchester United’s manager, Ruben Amorim, calling him “too stubborn” with his approach.

Lineker also raised concerns about how Amorim has treated young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo since the start of the season.

He made his comments after Manchester United’s 3-0 loss to rivals Manchester City in the Premier League derby at the Etihad Stadium.

In that match, Amorim chose to bring Mainoo off the bench while City cruised to victory with goals from Phil Foden and Erling Haaland.

The decision did not sit well with Lineker, especially since Mainoo had an excellent breakthrough season under former United manager Erik ten Hag during the 2023/24 campaign.

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker said he does not see Amorim changing his style anytime soon, describing the coach as “very stubborn.”

He added that Amorim’s treatment of Mainoo worries him, calling the midfielder a “brilliant young talent and a local lad who deserves better.”

Lineker explained that Mainoo looked sharp when he came on against City and admitted he was puzzled by why the youngster has been sidelined.

So far this season, Mainoo has not started a single Premier League game under Amorim.
