Tobi Amusan wins silver at World Athletics Championships

Nigerian hurdler Tobi Amusan won silver in the women’s 100m hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Monday, September 15. She finished just behind Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji.

Kambundji, 23, ran 12.24 seconds to win gold and set a new Swiss national record. This is Switzerland’s first-ever world title in the event. Amusan followed closely with 12.29 seconds to give Nigeria its 12th medal in World Championships history.

Grace Stark from the USA took bronze in 12.34 seconds. Her teammate Masai Russell was fourth with 12.44 seconds after a slow reaction at the start.

Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska ran 12.49 seconds for fifth place. Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton had the same time but finished sixth. Jamaica’s Danielle Williams was seventh in 12.53 seconds, and Nadine Visser of the Netherlands came eighth in 12.56 seconds.

Amusan had earlier won her semi-final heat in 12.36 seconds. In the final, she started well but could not stop Kambundji’s late push.

The 28-year-old now adds silver to her career medals. She is still the world record holder with her 12.12 seconds run in Eugene in 2022.
