Anambra: Police to train local security outfits on professionalism

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has approved a new plan for the Anambra Police Command to train local security groups on professionalism.

This move is meant to improve security in the state by encouraging better teamwork between community security outfits and the Nigerian Police.

Police Public Relations Officer in Anambra, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, revealed the development during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Awka on Saturday.

Ikenga explained that local security groups need reforms so that they can work in line with modern security practices.

He said the police must work hand in hand with the community-based outfits to build a stronger and more reliable security system.

According to him, local officers have valuable knowledge about their communities and environment, which can provide important information to the police.

Ikenga stressed that the public must learn to share useful information with security agencies. He said the police will train local officers to promote the idea: “If you see something, say something.” This way, the officers can also pass the message down to the people to improve community policing.

He further mentioned that the police are also preparing for the upcoming governorship election in Anambra scheduled for November 8.

Ikenga noted that giving basic training to local security officers will help reduce misunderstandings between them and the public.

He explained that training on public behavior, respect for human rights, and using intelligence properly will create a balance in security operations across the state.

According to him, when security workers lack proper skills, small disputes can escalate into unlawful actions.

He concluded by stressing that proper orientation in social behavior and human rights protection is very important for peace and smooth policing.
