Zookeeper, 58, e@ten alive by pack of lions in front of tourists after stepping out of truck at safari park

A 58-year-old zookeeper was killed after being attacked by a pride of lions in Bangkok, Thailand. The incident happened at Safari World Bangkok when Jian Rangkharasamee stepped out of his truck inside the lion enclosure.

One of the lions crept up from behind and pounced on him, before several others joined in. Witnesses said tourists tried to help by honking their horns and shouting, but the lions continued attacking until he died.

Professor Tavatchai Kanchanarin, who saw the incident, explained that the lion was about 10 metres away before it attacked and dragged the keeper to the ground.

He said three or four more lions joined in biting him. The terrifying scene lasted for about 15 minutes before staff could reach the victim.

Rangkharasamee, who had worked with lions for nearly 30 years, was rushed to Intrarat Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. Police believe he broke strict safety rules by stepping out of his vehicle. The safari zone has a no-exit policy for both workers and visitors.

According to police, the lions normally move away once an engine starts, but this time the truck door was left open. A colleague who heard the horns tried to help but it was too late, as the lions had already caused fatal injuries.

The Department of National Parks has now closed the safari zone while safety checks are carried out. Officials said an investigation will be done to determine the exact cause of the tragedy.

A senior Safari World official said all 32 lions in the park are licensed and staff are always reminded about safety protocols. He described the late zookeeper as a kind and dedicated man.

Wildlife expert Edwin Wiek said the attack is a strong reminder that lions and other wild animals remain dangerous, even if raised in captivity.
