Reports indicate that former President Goodluck Jonathan’s supporters in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are actively promoting his possible run for the 2027 presidency.
According to sources from The Nation, signs from Jonathan’s camp suggest that, despite previous denials, he is seriously considering entering the next presidential contest.
Insiders at the PDP National Secretariat in Wadata Plaza revealed that high-level discussions are underway to encourage Jonathan to return to active politics.
The Nation also reported that Jonathan has started reaching out to key Nigerian figures to gauge support for his potential campaign.
Among those he has reportedly met is former President Ibrahim Babangida, sources say.
A political ally mentioned that Jonathan’s recent statement about the betrayal that allegedly cost him the 2015 election was a strategic move to gain public sympathy.
The ally explained that if Jonathan had no interest in running, he could have simply denied it without any consequences. He compared Jonathan’s statement to a 2010 speech he gave while seeking the PDP presidential nomination for the 2011 election.
Jonathan’s cousin, Robert Azibaola, previously dismissed rumors that the former president was not interested in the 2027 race.
According to Azibaola, Jonathan “never said he would not contest in 2027. The so-called aide quoted in the publication does not exist.”
