Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, has explained why he said any politician who promises to serve only one term in office should undergo psychiatric evaluation.
His remarks followed the recent pledge by former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who said he would serve only one term if elected president in 2027.
Soludo noted that his comment was not random but connected to the ongoing debate about zoning in Anambra politics. He explained that similar one-term promises had been made in the past but were quickly rejected by voters.
According to him, politicians often use the “one-term pledge” as a sweetener to attract votes, even when their manifestos show they cannot achieve their plans within four years.
He recalled that in 2017, the same tactic was used against his predecessor, but the people of Anambra dismissed it, giving the ruling party a landslide victory in all 21 local government areas.
The governor stressed that Anambra has a zoning system that rotates power fairly across regions, and any attempt to use such promises to disrupt the process is misleading.
He argued that some politicians from the South senatorial zone are now trying to break this arrangement by offering a one-term pledge.
Soludo also pointed out the contradiction between politicians’ manifestos and their promises. He said that many of the projects listed in their plans cannot be achieved in just one term, which makes the pledge unrealistic and deceptive.
He further argued that such statements are an insult to the intelligence of the people, saying that anyone who tries to convince Anambra voters with this kind of promise is either being dishonest or unfit to hold public office.
The governor concluded that the people of Anambra are wise enough to see through such political tricks. He insisted that voters deserve leaders who respect them and not politicians who play on their intelligence with empty promises.
