Two arrested for staging kidnap and extorting money from their family in Delta

Two men have been arrested in Delta State after staging a fake kidnapping to trick their family into paying ransom money.

A video of the so-called abduction was first shared online by activist Harrison Gwamnishu. In the clip, one of the suspects pretended to be a northern kidnapper, threatening to harm the “victim” while demanding money from his family.

Harrison revealed that the video raised suspicions, which led to a proper investigation. Security officers later tracked down the suspects and confirmed that the kidnap was staged.

During questioning, the supposed victim admitted he planned the fake abduction to collect money from his family to fund his travel plans.

On Sunday, August 16, 2025, news spread that a man had been kidnapped at Onicha-Ugbo, Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State.

The Delta State Police Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber Crime Unit, working with the military from the 63 Brigade Asaba, the National Force for Security and Safety (#NFSS), and state trackers, quickly launched a rescue mission at Issele-Uku.

After hours of joint intelligence work, officers discovered the truth—it was not a real kidnap but a case of self-kidnapping. The two suspects were arrested and are now in police custody.

Security operatives thanked all the agencies that took part in the operation, including the 63 Brigade Asaba, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, and the #NFSS team, for their dedication and hard work in keeping the state safe.

Special recognition was also given to Delta State Governor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, for supporting the security teams throughout the investigation.

While commending the officers for their success, Harrison stressed the importance of providing better tools, vehicles, and resources to help security agencies carry out more effective operations across the state. With such support, similar victories can be achieved in every community.

Finally, the public was reminded to always report any suspected kidnapping cases immediately, as every tip is important in saving lives.
