The Nigerian Army has announced that there was a small explosion followed by a fire at Ilese Barracks in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, on Thursday morning, August 14, 2025.
Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, said in a statement that the incident was quickly handled and the fire was put out.
She explained that the damage was limited to the building where the explosion happened and to some stored items inside.
According to the Army’s statement, the incident took place in the early hours of August 14 when a blast occurred inside a storage building belonging to the 42 Engineers Brigade Counter Improvised Explosive Device Squadron. This blast caused a small fire.
Troops from the 12 Field Engineer Regiment, with help from the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service, responded immediately and stopped the fire from spreading further.
The Army confirmed that no one was killed or injured. The destruction was contained within the affected building and its stored materials. Officials are now inspecting the site to find out the level of material loss.
The Army also called on residents of Ilese and nearby areas to stay calm and continue with their normal daily routines. Investigations are already underway, with the Army working with other agencies to find the cause of the incident and make sure it does not happen again.
They reassured the public that the Nigerian Army remains dedicated to protecting the lives of both its personnel and the people living around its bases.
