Champions League: Mourinho eliminates Van Persie’s Feyenoord

Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce have booked their place in the Champions League qualifying playoffs after producing a thrilling comeback to knock out Robin van Persie’s Feyenoord on Tuesday night.

The Turkish side went into the match trailing 2-1 from the first leg in the Netherlands last week.

Things got even worse when Tsuyoshi Watanabe put Feyenoord ahead in the 41st minute, extending their advantage.

But Mourinho’s men responded in style, scoring twice before halftime and eventually running out 5-2 winners on the night in Istanbul.

That result saw them progress 6-4 on aggregate, completing a memorable turnaround.

Fenerbahce will now face Portuguese powerhouse Benfica, who beat Nice in their qualifier, in the first leg of the playoff round next week, with a place in the lucrative 36-team group stage on the line.
