A leading Boko Haram fighter called Abu Nasr, also known as Amir Fiya, was killed during a failed attack in Rann, the main town of Kala Balge area in Borno State. Soldiers from the North East Joint Task Force, known as Operation Hadin Kai, fought off the attackers, who were suspected to be Boko Haram or ISWAP members, killing many of them. The battle started on the night of August 7 and lasted into the early hours of August 8, 2025. The military recovered several weapons including rocket-propelled grenades and other explosives.
Officials and local sources confirmed that Abu Nasr, who led the group’s entry from Cameroon into Rann, was among those killed. With the help of air support, the soldiers defended Rann and eliminated many fighters, including their top leader. During cleanup after the fight, the military found seven bodies and signs that more insurgents were injured or killed.
Sadly, two Nigerian soldiers died after an RPG hit their vehicle during the attack. The troops also seized AK47 rifles, magazines, rocket-propelled grenades, and other explosive devices from the insurgents.
Rann is about 197 kilometers from Maiduguri and lies near the Cameroon border. It has been a frequent target of cross-border terrorist attacks. Despite the ongoing threats, the soldiers remain motivated as they continue clearing the area of militants.
